Bum meets Dom at Dynamo training

Bum Phillips

HOUSTON - Football coaching legend and Texas icon Bum Phillips visited Dynamo practice at Carl Lewis Field Tuesday, meeting with Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear and President Oliver Luck. Phillips was at the training session to shoot promotional video for the Dynamo marketing department in conjunction with Blue Ribbon Sausage, a Dynamo sponsor and a brand long associated with Phillips.

While meeting with Kinnear, Phillips praised the efforts of the Dynamo bringing soccer to the forefront in Houston, where Phillips coached the NFL Oilers and became part of the city's fabric. Phillips also brought up some crossover coaching strategy.

"If I had to go back into high school coaching, I'd require every kid that played football, play soccer, too," said Phillips. "Soccer is a much better game for kids than any other sport I can think of. It makes you use all your body skills."

Phillips left the Oilers in 1980. Luck, a former Oiler quarterback, was quick to show Phillips a common denominator between the Oilers and Dynamo. "Columbia Blue," pointed out Luck. The color is an accent on current Dynamo uniforms and warmup outfits.
