Toronto FC and midfielder Nick DeLeon have agreed to a contract extension through the 2021 season, the club announced Thursday.

DeLeon, 28, is in his first season with the club after being acquired in the MLS Re-Entry Draft this offseason. He has made four league appearances with TFC, contributing a goal and three assists. He is on pace to set career highs in both categories at this early stage of the season.

“In a short period of time with our club, Nick has had a significant impact both on and off the field,” TFC general manager Ali Curtis said in a club statement. “Nick is a talented soccer player, but he is also an exceptional human being. We are very happy to extend his contract and ensure he remains part of our club moving forward.”

DeLeon spent the first seven seasons of his MLS career with D.C. United, making 180 appearances with his first club. He scored six goals in his rookie season but didn't score more than two over the next six years. His three assists are already the most he's had in a season since 2015, when he had five.

Toronto are next in action on Saturday on the road against the Seattle Sounders (4 pm ET MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US, TSN in Canada), a clash between two of MLS's remaining unbeaten sides.
