Columbus Crew SC have transferred defender Gaston Sauro to Liga MX side Toluca FC, the club announced Wednesday.

Sauro spent five seasons with Crew SC, starting 37 of his 39 appearances.

“We would like to thank Gaston for his professionalism and commitment to Columbus Crew SC during his time with the club,” Crew SC president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “Gaston was an inspiration to his teammates with his perseverance in overcoming an injury to play soccer again. We want to wish him all the best in this next stage of his career.”

The 29-year-old Argentine arrived in Columbus from FC Basel of Switzerland’s First Division in a Secondary Transfer Window move in 2015. He helped lead Columbus reach MLS Cup that season. He made just 13 appearances in 2016 before suffering a left knee injury that would also sideline him for the entire 2017 season.

Sauro made his return last May and started seven regular season matches as well as two MLS Cup Playoffs appearances. Before Basel, the 10-year veteran played for Boca Juniors from 2009-12. He also spent a season on loan with Calcio Catania of Italy’s Serie B in 2014-15.
