DC United 1, North Carolina FC 1 (4-3 PKs aet) | US Open Cup Recap

D.C. United held off a spirited challenge from North Carolina FC of the USL to advance in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, winning a penalty-kick shootout after 120 minutes of open play ended in a 1-1 draw at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

United Homegrown Ian Harkes banged home a close-range finish to put the home side in front early. But NCFC conjured up an equalizer via a nifty side volley from Marios Lomis in the 83rd minute, sending the Fourth Round matchup to extra time, and eventually, PKs.

D.C. goalkeeper David Ousted stood tall in the shootout, saving Kyle Bekker's spot kick which, combined with a miss by Peabo Doue, earned victory for the MLSers.
