COUNTRY: United States
CLUB: Real Salt Lake
YEARS PRO: 3
Justin Glad is just 19, but he's already in his third pro season – and continuing to make steady progress with Real Salt Lake, who signed him to a Homegrown deal in April 2014. The young defender didn't see the pitch as a rookie, but made nine appearances across all competitions in 2015 and was named to the Chipotle Homegrown Game roster. This year he has 23 starts in 24 outings (one goal, one assist) as one half of the club's preferred central pairing, and was once again selected for the Homegrown Game.
Glad is a natural center back but can play any position on the back line. His body has come catching up to do with his skills, though; at 145 pounds, he's still growing into his 6-foot frame. As the US youth international continues to bulk up, so should his role in RSL's defense.
What the technical staffers say:
“When I had my list of center backs, [Glad is] at the top of the list. I expect him to continue to grow.”
“A player that plays bigger than his frame, bigger than his size.”
“We’ve seen some huge mistakes at times with some of his performances, but he seems to play with a lot of confidence for a player of his age and has had some good early experience playing with Salt Lake.”
“If he puts on a few pounds and gains some strength, he’ll be a very good center back for Salt Lake and for this league.”
