Atlanta's Brad Guzan win 2017 MLS Save of the Year

2017 Awards - Save of the Year - Brad Guzan

He was only in MLS for half of the regular season, but that didn’t stop Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan from taking home the 2017 MLS Save of the Year.

Guzan won the award, determined by a fan vote, for his outrageous stop on New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips on Oct. 15. Wright-Phillips looked like he had a sure tap-in on a Sacha Kljestan cross in the second half of the scoreless draw at Red Bull Arena, but Guzan somehow scrambled to his left and dove in front of the English striker, getting a hand to his one-touch shot and deflecting the effort over the bar.

The win gave Atlanta a clean sweep in the Goal and Save of the Year awards; forward Hector Villalba won 2017 Goal of the Year for his stunning strike against Orlando City SC.

Guzan, who agreed to a deal with Atlanta in January but didn’t join the team from English Premier League club Middlesbrough until July, played in 15 regular season and playoff games with the Five Stripes in 2017.
