The New England Revolution have signed 24-year-old Cameroonian midfielder Wilfrid Kaptoum on a free transfer, the club announced Wednesday.

Kapotum spent the last six seasons in Spain, mostly at FC Barcelona and Real Betis. He was recently on loan at Union Deportiva Almeria in the Segunda Division, then was out of contract in October 2020.

“Wilfrid Kaptoum is a talented central midfielder who has been developed in an excellent soccer culture. He will bring a great work ethic and experience to our team,” Revolution sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena said in a team release. “Wilfrid’s pace and passing ability will help strengthen our midfield. We believe he will be a quality addition to the Revolution, and we look forward to his arrival in Foxborough.”

Kaptoum joined FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy at age 12 and made his professional debut with Barcelona B in 2014. He featured in three games for the La Liga club’s first team, then registered 15 La Liga appearances with Real Betis from 2018-19.

While his senior-team debut with Cameroon awaits, Kaptoum was a regular in the matchday squad during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He's also featured for Cameroon's U-20 national team.
