The San Jose Earthquakes have renewed the loan for defender Oswaldo Alanis from Chivas Guadalajara for the 2021 MLS season, the club announced Wednesday.

ā€œOswaldoā€™s impact was noticeable from the very start of the season and that was felt on the pitch and inside the locker room,ā€ Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli said in a statement. ā€œHe set a high bar for the way he reads the game and for the way he leads by example. As we agreed on terms with Chivas last year, our goal was to count on Oswaldo beyond 2020, and weā€™re excited that he will continue to play an important role for us next season.ā€

The Quakes signed the 31-year-old former Mexican international on a one-year loan deal using Targeted Allocation Money on January 28, 2020, reuniting him with Matias Almeyda, who coached him at Chivas from 2015-18. Alanis made 14 appearances in his debut MLS season, making an immediate impact offensively, with a goal and an assist on his MLS debut in a 2-2 draw against Toronto FC March 29. He later scored the dramatic winner against the Vancouver Whitecaps at the MLS is Back Tournament in July.
