MLS players on national team duty: Gaston Gimenez scores winner for Paraguay

Gaston Gimenez - Paraguay - October 13, 2020

There were several MLS players in action on Tuesday with their national teams between World Cup Qualifying in South America and international friendlies. The full list of matches follow below.

South American World Cup Qualifying

Ecuador 4, Uruguay 2

Two days after LAFC beat the Seattle Sounders 3-1, players from both teams featured prominently in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier in Ecuador. There was victory to savor for Seattle's Xavier Arreaga, who played the full 90 minutes, and LAFC's Diego Palacios, who came off the bench in the 74th minute, in their 4-2 win over Uruguay.

After winning a penalty in Uruguay's opening 2-1 win over Chile, LAFC forward Brian Rodriguez started again for Uruguay but this time failed to have the same impact and was taken off at halftime. His club teammate Diego Rossi was once again an unused substitute.

There was no place in the Ecuador matchday squad for another LAFC man, Jose Cifuentes, or Orlando's Sebastian Jhegson Mendez.

Venezuela 0, Paraguay 1

Chicago's Gaston Gimenez scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining and Paraguay's 'keeper saved a stoppage-time penalty kick attempt by former NYCFC midfielder Yangel Herrera, as Paraguay earned a big road victory.

Gimenez's Paraguay teammate, New York Red BullsKaku, was an unused substitute.

LA Galaxy right back Rolf Feltscher and NY Red Bulls central midfielder Cristian Casseres Jr. both started the game and went the full 90 for Venezuela and two other MLS players, Jose "El Brujo" Martinez of Philadelphia and left back Miguel Navarro of the Chicago Fire, were on the Vinotinto bench and did not feature in the match.

Peru 2, Brazil 4

Orlando City goalkeeper Pedro Gallese and Peru went up 1-0 and 2-1 against vaunted Brazil, but eventually succumbed to a controversial comeback featuring two red cards and two penalty kicks against Peru. Neymar netted a hat trick, including the two PKs he converted against Gallese.

The big story heading into the match was the positive COVID-19 test result for Seattle Sounders forward Raul Ruidiaz, one of two players on the Peru squad who missed out due to a confirmed positive. Ruidiaz was a starter for Peru in their opening 2-2 draw in Paraguay, a match which also saw Gallese start.

Portland Timbers midfielder Andy Polo was a late stoppage time sub and San Jose Earthquakes left back Marcos Lopez did not come off the bench in the match for Peru.

International Friendlies

Mexico 2, Algeria 2

LA Galaxy midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos and Inter Miami CF playmaker Rodolfo Pizarro started for El Tri in their match against Algeria that was played in the Netherlands. Both played 64 minutes before being substituted in the 2-2 draw. Sporting KC's Alan Pulido came off the bench in the 73rd minute.

Tunisia 1, Nigeria 1

After making his first appearance for Tunisia's senior team in a 3-0 friendly win over Sudan last Friday, Vancouver Whitecaps center back Jasser Khmiri was not in the gameday squad for Tuesday's friendly against Nigeria, a tuneup match ahead of African Cup of Nations Qualifying matches in November.
