Jack Harrison gets winning assist for Leeds, Weston McKennie another Juventus start | European roundup

Former New York City FC standout Jack Harrison helped Leeds to a dramatic derby win in the English Premier League and Weston McKennie earned a second straight start for Juventus in a Serie A clash of titans against Roma to highlight Sunday’s European exports report.


Sheffield United 0, Leeds United 1


Harrison supplied the assist on Patrick Bamford’s winning goal two minutes from time to lift Leeds to a 1-0 Yorkshire derby win Sunday at Bramal Lane.


The former NYCFC standout whipped in a cross from the left to Bamford, who headed back across the goal to beat Aaron Ramsdale for Leeds second win back in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old Harrison, who had 14 goals and 13 assists in two seasons at NYCFC, has a goal and an assist in three appearance for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.


Tottenham Hotspur 1, Newcastle United 1


Miguel Almiron cooled off a bit Sunday, but Newcastle United earned a controversial point in a 1-1 draw with host Tottenham.


The ex-Atlanta United star earned the start and played 77 minutes before being replaced by Andy Carroll. The visitors leveled on a Callum Wilson debated penalty kick deep in second-half stoppage time.


Roma 2, Juventus 2


After an impressive debut in a win over Sampdoria last weekend, McKennie earned his second start for Juventus, which rallied to earn a 2-2 draw with Roma at Olympic Stadium.


The US men’s national team star again partnered in center midfield with Adrien Rabiot, who was sent off on a second bookable offense in the 62nd minute.


The former FC Dallas academy star played 58 minutes for Juve, which was led by Cristian Ronaldo’s brace.


TSG Hoffenheim 4, Bayern Munich 1


Canadian international and former Vancouver Whitecaps starlet Alphonso Davies went the distance in a shock 4-1 defeat to TSG Hoffenheim for defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich Sunday at PreZero Arena.


Andrej Kramaric struck for a late brace and the hosts scored twice inside the opening 30 minutes in the stunning upset. Joshua Kimmich scored the lone goal for Bayern in the 36th minute.


SC Freiberg 1, VfL Wolfsburg 1


John Brooks played 90 minutes for Wolfsburg in a 1-1 draw with SC Freiburg Sunday at Schwarzwald-Stadion.


After conceding in the 11th minute, on a near-post header by Nils Petersen off a corner kick, Josip Brekalo leveled three minutes from halftime on a free kick just outside the box. Brooks was booked in the 34th minute. 


Manchester City 2, Leicester City 5


After making his Manchester City debut in a Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth in the midweek, US men’s national team goalkeeper Zack Steffen, formerly of Columbus Crew SC, was in the 18-man matchday roster as Pep Guardiola’s side was stunned by Leicester City, 5-2, which was powered by a Jamie Vardy hat trick, at the Etihad Stadium.


Austria Vienna 2, FC Admira Wacker Modling 2


Former Sporting Kansas City defender Erik Palmer-Brown played the entire 90 minutes for Austria Vienna in a 2-2 home draw with FC Admira Wacker Modling Sunday at Generali Arena. Palmer-Brown, in his second season in the Austrian Bundesliga on loan from Manchester City, was booked two minutes from time.


Falkenbergs FF 1, Hammarby 3


Former USMNT striker Aron Johannsson has continued his hot start for Hammarby in the Swedish Allsvenskanliga, scoring a brace in a 3-1 win over Falkenbergs FF Sunday at Falcon Alkoholfri Arena.


Johannssson, who has four goals in 19 appearances for the US, though his last cap came in 2015, scored what proved to be the winner in the 66th minute and added an insurance tally from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

The 29-year-old, who has expressed interest in a move to MLS, has seven goals in nine appearances for Hammarby, which was backstopped by David Ousted, who played for the Vancouver Whitecaps, D.C. United and Chicago Fire in a seven-year MLS career.


Sonderjyske 3, AaB 1


It’s now three goals in three games for Haji Wright at his new club with the former LA Galaxy academy and US U-23 standout scoring a brace for SonderjyskE Fodbold in a 3-1 win over AaB in the Danish Superliga Sunday at Sydbank Park.

Wright, who signed with the reigning Danish Cup champions last month, came off the bench in the 63rd minute and scored the winner two minutes from time before adding an insurance goal deep in stoppage time.
