Austin FC submits bid to host 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup, future NCAA College Cup at new stadium

Austin FC has made bids to host games in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup and the 2022 through 2025 men's and women's NCAA College Cup tournaments, club president Andy Loughnane told area freelance soccer reporter Chris Bils.

One caveat would be that the bid for the Gold Cup assumes the club's stadium is complete by its target date, currently April of 2021.

Loughnane was quoted on Twitter as saying that Austin would be "uniquely positioned" to hold Gold Cup matches if construction stays on track. Previous editions of the tournament have regularly featured matches in Texas but have bypassed Austin for MLS and NFL stadiums in Dallas and Houston, as well as the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.

Matches in Austin's new 20,500-seat stadium could include group stage games, quarterfinals or even a semifinal, Bils wrote.

The bid for the college cup games could include any number of the up to eight total men's and women's final fours to be held over the four year span, Bils added in another Tweet. The NCAA is expected to make its decision in October, a team spokesperson told MLSsoccer.com.
