MLS Classics: Seattle Sounders 2016 MLS Cup run stars with late drama vs. Sporting Kansas City

The first playoff step en route to lifting MLS Cup for the Seattle Sounders in 2016 came with a dramatic Knockout Round win over Sporting Kansas City in the latest edition of MLS Classics, and the final edition of Audi Playoff Week.

Both teams clinched their berth on Decision Day. The postseason seemed like a dream early in the season as the Sounders got off to a slow start and made a coaching change with Brian Schmetzer replacing Sigi Schmid.

But Seattle went on a second-half tear and that momentum carried over to the MLS Cup Playoffs.

However, on this night, the visitors were more dangerous throughout a feisty affair. But Stefan Frei was strong throughout, giving his team a chance to nick one late with seven saves. That winner came on the Sounders’ lone shot on frame and the winner two minutes from full time was Nelson Valdez’s only goal of the season.

As you settle in for the stream, here’s how both teams lined up that night. Also, be sure to check out the full catalog of MLS Classics matches.
