Bundesliga roundup: How MLS, United States exports fared on Matchday 27

John Brooks - Wolfsburg - defending against Dortmund

Matchday 27 of Bundesliga action offered plenty of intrigue for MLS and US men’s national team fans.

Here’s how they all fared during high-end soccer's continued return amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wolfsburg 0, Borussia Dortmund 2

This one included several USMNT angles, as Dortmund scored on either side of halftime for their sixth straight win. John Brooks went the full 90 minutes at center back for Wolfsburg, and then Giovanni Reyna entered as a substitute in the 80th minute for Thorgan Hazard. Reyna was slated to start last weekend in the Revierderby against Schalke, though was withdrawn in warmups due to injury. Now, the NYCFC academy product has made 12 appearances for Dortmund off the bench.

Freiburg 0, Werder Bremen 1

USMNT striker Josh Sargent and Werder Bremen earned a much-needed three points against Freiburg thanks to a 19th-minute goal from Leonardo Bittencourt. Sargent started and looked lively over 63 minutes before being removed for Yuya Osako, helping his team’s push to avoid relegation. Last weekend, the youngster logged a 19-minute stint against Bayer Leverkusen off the bench.

Mainz 0, RB Leipzig 5

This match goes down as the Timo Werner show as the young German international struck for a hat trick in the comfortable road win for Leipzig, who led 3-0 after 36 minutes and had a four-goal bulge three minutes after the break. Former New York Red Bulls and USMNT star Tyler Adams came on for a 30-minute substitute appearance, replacing Marcel Sabitzer, who scored in the 36th minute. Leipzig's three points catapulted them into third in the table.

Schalke 0, Augsburg 3

Schalke's struggles continued Sunday with a stunning home defeat to an Augsburg side fighting relegation. It was the fourth defeat in five matches for Schalke and comes on the heels of the 4-0 derby defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga's return last week. Weston McKennie was again in the starting XI, but was subbed off in the 74th minute in favor of Munir Mercan. Schalke dropped to eighth and are winless in nine straight league contests.
