MLS Classics: LAFC star Carlos Vela breaks single-season goals record in style

Anticipation turned into sweet relief back on Oct. 6, 2019, when Carlos Vela broke the MLS single-season scoring mark in style on Decision Day presented by AT&T.

That’s the scene for our latest “MLS Classics” viewing, when LAFC’s captain turned on the turbo boosters against the Colorado Rapids. The previous mark was set by Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez with 31 goals, and Vela’s record-breaking moment came during the final MLS match for US men’s national team goalkeeping legend Tim Howard.

The star showing cemented Vela’s place as the 2019 Landon Donovan MLS MVP, a season where he finished with 34 goals and 15 assists. The Black & Gold had already won the Supporters' Shield, so this was all just an exclamation point en route to a record-setting 72 points.

As you settle into watching the stream above, get reacquainted with the starting lineups for both teams below. And here’s the full list of MLS Classics for your viewing pleasure.
