David Zdrilic - Chicago Fire - assistant coach

The staff under head coach Raphael Wicky is starting to formalize, as Chicago Fire FC announced the addition of David Zdrilic as an assistant coach Saturday. He was most recently an assistant coach for Bundesliga club RB Leipzig’s U-19 team, and will join the Fire upon receipt of his work visa.

“David has a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach, and we’re delighted to have him join the Fire,” Wicky said in a team release. “He’s played at a high level, he can relate to the players and he will bring a winning mentality to this club.”

Zdrilic, 45, made 395 professional appearances during his playing days across Europe and his native Australia. A forward, he recorded 20 goals in 30 caps for Australia and counts Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen among his club stops.

Before coaching with RB Leipzig’s U-19s, Zdrilic was an assistant coach for their U-17 team. He has also served as U-20 head coach for Sydney FC, his hometown club.

“It’s an absolute privilege to join the Fire,” Zdrilic said in a team release. “Major League Soccer has always appealed to me and what’s been happening in this league and specifically the Fire has been truly phenomenal. The potential to grow something great with the Fire is huge, and I look forward to being a part of it.”

Beyond playing and coaching, Zdrilic has become a prominent soccer broadcaster. He’s worked the last three FIFA World Cups, and has covered UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches.

Chicago open their 2020 season March 1 at the Seattle Sounders and debut at Soldier Field March 21 against Atlanta United.
