How a rideshare pickup at an Atlanta United game changed this Uber driver's life

Kevin Esch, Latonya Young - Atlanta United fan and Uber driver - tuition story

A trip to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to pick up an Atlanta United fan proved to be a life-altering moment for rideshare driver Latonya Young, in a heartwarming story that’s earning major media coverage this week in Georgia and beyond.

A single mother who was juggling a daytime job as a hairstylist and night work for Uber with her efforts to earn an associates’ degree from George State University, Young had to drop out of classes due to an outstanding $700 tuition bill.

After picking up ATLUTD supporter Kevin Esch at MBS, this backstory came out as they chatted during the ride. Then, a few days later, she got an unexpected call from GSU.

“The message stated, 'You can register for classes now.' I was literally blown away,” Young explained in an interview with local station WSB-TV. As it turned out, Esch had been inspired by her struggle and paid her tuition balance, helping her continue her studies.

“A stranger has never done that – or done anything like that – for me,” added Young. “This one changed my life. That one ride.”

Young recently completed her associates’ degree in criminal justice and plans to keep advancing towards an undergraduate diploma, and eventually a law degree.

“When he paid the balance, I had to do this for him,” Young said of Esch, who attended her recent graduation. “I maintained my grades, As and Bs. Just trying to do everything to make sure he knows I appreciate him.”
