From USL to MLS, Maxime Crepeau's breakout season | Inside the Audi Player Index

Of all the positions in MLS, goalkeeper is quite possibly the most opportunistic of them all. Throughout the league there are stellar netminders waiting for their chance. All this means that when the rare opportunity comes along, these individuals must seize it or risk ending up back on the bench.

Maxime Crepeau is a prime example of this; the 5’11 Canadian was stuck behind Evan Bush with the Montreal Impact, and even moved to USL with the Ottawa Fury, where he earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors, before heading back to MLS through the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2019.

It may have been a difficult year for Marc Dos Santos' men but Crepeau was one of the bright spots. Goalkeeper stats can be deceiving as there are inextricably linked to the quality of defense in front of them, however even with the Caps’ conceding the 5th-most goals in 2019, Crepeau's numbers were impressive:

  • 5th most total saves of any MLS Goalkeeper (114 saves)
  • 4.4 saves per 90 minutes (114 saves in 2340 total minutes)
  • 67 saves on shots taken from inside the box (Tied for 5th most of all MLS goalkeepers)
  • Conceded 1.77 goals per game (46 total goals conceded in 26 games)
  • 71.7% shots saved (114 shots saved out of 159 total shots)

Perhaps most impressive of all, and most revealing of the Whitecaps season; on Aug. 24, 2019, Crepeau set an MLS record for the amount of saves recorded in a single match (16 saves) in a 3-1 loss vs the San Jose Earthquakes. The previous record (15) was set by none other than MLS goalkeeping legend Tony Meola, placing Crepeau in good company and hinting at his potential.

Matt Doyle and Bobby Warshaw take a closer look at Crepeau's saves from that game and over the course of the 2019 season to understand how the keeper impacted the 'Caps and what could lay ahead for him for both club and country.
