Strikers tend to fall into one of two categories. Target forwards that stay central, offer hold-up play and finish in the box, and strikers that drift wide, find space behind the defense and open up space for the midfield. NYCFC may have found a striker who can play both these roles, and exceptionally well at that. NYCFC was winless in the regular season before 28-year-old Brazilian Heber started his first game, and since then they shot up the Eastern Conference standings to grab the No. 1 seed, thanks in part to his 15 goals and 4 assists.
If the Cityzens hope to capture their first piece of silverware in club history, they’ll need Heber to continue his fine form. Their first playoff match against Toronto FC will surely be a good test.
