Sacramento mayor ignites rivalry with LA, San Jose as Republic join MLS

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg celebrated the announcement of his city becoming the 29th Major League Soccer club on Monday by taking an immediate jibe at the two Californian cities that will become immediate rivals when Sacramento Republic FC enter the league in 2022.

"I have texted Mayor Sam Liccardo in San Jose and Mayor Eric Garcetti in Los Angeles, expressing my condolences to them on becoming the second-best MLS teams in California," Steinberg said on the podium in front of an approving set of Sacramento Republic supporters at Monday's event.

California currently plays host to three MLS clubs: LA Galaxy, LAFC and the San Jose Earthquakes.
