LAFC forward Brian Rodriguez continues to stake his claim for a permanent spot on Uruguay’s senior national team, as he scored Friday night in a 1-0 win against fellow CONMEBOL side Peru.

The Young Designated Player, 19, found net in the 17th minute of the friendly, one-timing home a right-footed finish that served as the game-winner. It was Uruguay’s second straight match that Rodriguez scored in, after he struck in a 1-1 draw with the US men’s national team Sept. 11.

For Peru, defenders Carlos Ascues (Orlando City), Alexander Callens (New York City FC) and Marcos Lopez (San Jose Earthquakes) were all unused substitutes. Vancouver Whitecaps' forward Yordy Reyna subbed on in the 63rd minute, but was unable to find an equalizer.

Rodriguez was signed by LAFC on Aug. 7, the final day of the Secondary Transfer Window, from Uruguayan club Peñarol. He arrived with Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana experience, plus served a key role at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Since coming to MLS, Rodriguez has featured in seven matches (five starts) as LAFC wrapped up the Supporters’ Shield title, a 2020 Concacaf Champions League spot and the MLS record for points (72) in a regular season. His signing also marked a developing relationship between LAFC and Penarol. Their other winger, Diego Rossi, also came from the South American club.

Uruguay will again face Peru on Tuesday, and then Rodriguez and LAFC can look forward to facing Minnesota United or the LA Galaxy on Oct. 24 in the Western Conference semifinals. As the No. 1 seed, they've received a first-round bye.
