Portland Timbers vs. Minnesota United FC
Providence Park – Portland
September 22 – 3:55 PM ET
TV: ESPN, TSN2
STREAMING: WatchESPN
The Portland Timbers will look to rebound from a pair of home defeats that have pushed them below the playoff line in the Western Conference when they host a Minnesota United squad trying to solidify a home playoff game as the sides meet Sunday afternoon at Providence Park.
Following a 1-0 defeat at home to D.C. United, the Timbers (13-13-4) suffered a 2-0 home loss to the New York Red Bulls Wednesday night. Kyle Duncan put the visitors in front in the 3rd minute. After the Timbers had chances go awry, including a lob off the post by Diego Chara and an open attempt slotted wide by Jeremy Ebobisse, Danny Royer added a stoppage-time penalty kick to put the game away.
The Loons (14-10-6) are third in the Western Conference after a stirring 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake at Allianz Field on Sunday. Darwin Quintero struck for a brace after Albert Rusnak put the visitors in front and Ethan Finlay added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute.
This is the second meeting this season between the sides, with Minnesota United winning 1-0 at home August 4. Finlay scored the lone goal, a penalty kick in the second minute of second-half stoppage time after Larrys Mabiala was called for a handball following Video Review.
