Ahead of the inaugural Leagues Cup final on Sep. 18 between Tigres UANL and Cruz Azul at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, the trophy the sides will play for has been unveiled.
Designed by both leagues and produced by Mexican artisans, the modern and dynamic trophy is forged and engraved by hand and is made of silver.
The trophy weighs in at 22 pounds and measures approximately 16.5 inches in height with a diameter of 16.1 inches. The original, perpetual trophy will be held by the winning league during the 12 months of its win, while a replica will be created for each champion to store in their trophy case permanently.
The inaugural tournament kicked off in July, pitting four MLS sides against four Liga MX clubs. Tigres overcame Real Salt Lake and Club América en route to the final while Cruz Azul saw past the Chicago Fire and LA Galaxy.
Next season, the tournament field will double in 2020 from 8 participating clubs to 16, evenly split between the two leagues.
