One point separates the third-place Seattle Sounders and fourth-place LA Galaxy, who meet in a critical Western Conference showdown Sunday evening at CenturyLink Field.
The Sounders (12-8-7) repeated as Cascadia Cup champions, defeating the Portland Timbers, 2-1, at Providence Park last Friday. Cristian Roldan put the visitors in front in the 22nd minute, and then Raul Ruidiaz doubled the Sounders' lead two minutes into the second half. Diego Valeri pulled Portland a goal back on a deflected free kick in the 54th minute.
The Galaxy (13-11-3) raced out to a 3-1 first-half lead, but settled for a 3-3 draw against LAFC last Sunday, remaining undefeated in El Trafico. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a brace and Cristian Pavon added a goal to put the Galaxy in front inside 16 minutes. Latif Blessing also scored twice in the first half and Carlos Vela leveled in the 53rd minute.
This is Seattle and LA's second meeting this season, with the teams playing to a wild 2-2 draw August 17 at Dignity Health Sports Complex. Despite an early red card to Daniel Steres, the Galaxy led 2-1 on a pair of Ibrahimovic goals after Ruidiaz's opening strike. An own goal by Jorgen Skjelvik in the 82nd minute capped the scoring.
