In a rematch of the 2018 MLS Cup final, the Portland Timbers host Atlanta United at Providence Park Sunday night in the finale of Week 24 of the regular season.
The Timbers (11-9-4) made it four wins in the last five games when they defeated the Chicago Fire 3-2 at Providence Park Wednesday night. Jorge Moreira and Brian Fernandez scored 10 minutes apart to give the Timbers a 2-0 lead inside of 21 minutes. Nemanja Nikolic cut the deficit in half in the 74th minute before Fernandez netted his second two minutes from full time. CJ Sapong struck in the 90th minute for the visitors, but the Timbers held on to secure all three points.
Atlanta United (13-9-3) have also won four of their last five in MLS play and are coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over Club America to capture the Campeones Cup Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. After Emerson Hyndman opened the scoring in the 5th minute, Renato Ibarra and Roger Martinez put the Liga MX champions in front. But Jeff Larentowicz leveled with a stunning shot from distance before Josef Martinez amended for a missed first-half penalty kick with the winner from the spot in the 65th minute.
