2019 Canadian Championship — Semifinals, 2nd leg
Cavalry FC vs. Montreal Impact
Spruce Meadows — Calgary
August 14 — 9:30 PM ET
The Montreal Impact are one step closer to a fifth appearance in the Canadian Championship finals, but need to close out upset-minded Cavalry FC, who bring an away goal back to Spruce Meadows for the second leg of the semifinals Wednesday night.
The Impact rode a Nacho Piatti brace to win the opening leg 2-1 at Stade Saputo last Wednesday. The Argentine, who also scored in the third round as well, scored his first goal in the 32nd minute and earned his brace less than four minutes into the second half as he tapped in a Bacary Sagna cross. Sergio Camacho gave the Canadian Premier League side a lifeline with a 69th-minute goal. Less than two minutes later, though, captain Nikolas Ledgerwood was sent off for his second bookable offense.
Piatti didn't travel to Calgary, though, and is sidelined for two games with an adductor injury suffered Saturday against the Chicago Fire.
Cavalry FC remain the lone undefeated team in the CPL's fall campaign following a 0-0 draw against HFX Wanderers FC Saturday at Wanderers Ground. Christian Oxner came up with a penalty-kick save to deny Dominique Malonga after the Wanderers goalkeeper took down Oliver Minatel in the box.
The Impact's struggles in the league continued Saturday with a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Fire, the club's sixth defeat in their last seven MLS contests. After conceding twice in the opening 20 minutes on goals by Dax McCarty and Nemanja Nikolic, Montreal leveled through a 34th-minute Saphir Taider penalty kick and a headed tally by Bacary Sagna. But just when it appeared the Eastern Conference foes would share the points, Bastian Schweinsteiger scored the winner two minutes from full time.
- This is the second all-time meeting between the Montreal Impact and Cavalry FC in the Canadian Championship, with the Impact winning 2-1 in the first leg on Aug. 7.
