For the first time since last season's MLS Cup Playoffs matchup, Atlanta United and New York City FC meet in a battle of Eastern Conference powerhouses Sunday at Mercedes Benz Stadium.
Atlanta (12-9-3) have moved up to second place in the East and booked a spot in the U.S. Open Cup final, forming a pretty solid week for Frank de Boer's club. It started with a 3-0 win over the LA Galaxy last Sunday courtesy of a pair of first-half own goals and a second-half penalty kick by Josef Martinez. The Five Stripes then dispatched rival Orlando City SC, 2-0, in the USOC semifinals Wednesday. Eric Remedi and Emerson Hyndman scored a goal in each half.
NYCFC (10-4-8) rallied from a second-half deficit to defeat the Houston Dynamo, 3-2, at Yankee Stadium Thursday night. Taty Castellanos came off the bench to score a late brace, including the stoppage-time winner after Mauro Manotas, who came on at halftime, gave the Dynamo the lead in the 77th minute. Alexandru Mitrita put the Cityzens in front in the 16th minute before Juan David Cabezas leveled 10 minutes later for Houston. The Western Conference side played the final 61 minutes with 10 men after Romell Quioto saw straight red for a forearm to the back of Ronald Matarrita's head.
