For the second time in four days, Minnesota United and the Portland Timbers meet at Allianz Field, this time with a first-ever trip to the U.S. Open Cup final on the line for the Western Conference foes.


In the first USOC matchup against the Loons, the Timbers are hoping to avenge Sunday's 1-0 defeat in St. Paul. Ethan Finlay scored the lone goal with a second-half stoppage time penalty kick after Larrys Mabiala was called for a handball following Video Review.


Minnesota United


The Loons erased an early deficit to score six unanswered goals in a 6-1 win over New Mexico United in the USOC quarterfinals July 10 at Allianz Field.


After falling behind in the 7th minute, Angelo Rodriguez leveled three minutes later with the first of his three goals. Darwin Quintero, Jan Gregus and Miguel Ibarra added a goal apiece as Minnesota United took a 5-1 lead into the second half to reach the USOC semifinals for the first time. 


Portland Timbers


The Timbers reached their second-ever USOC semifinal, defeating LAFC, 1-0, July 10 at Banc of California Stadium. It was the second consecutive USOC quarterfinal meeting between the Western Conference rivals, with Portland avenging a 3-2 defeat in 2018,   


Jeremy Ebobisse scored the lone goal in the 84th minute on his first touch of the game to secure the win. Portland also reached the semifinals in 2013, losing to Real Salt Lake, 2-1, in Sandy. Alvaro Saborio and Joao Plata gave the hosts a 2-0 lead before Diego Valeri struck in second-half stoppage time.
