DC United's Lucas Rodriguez bags first brace of MLS career in rout of Cincy

By now you've probably heard about "Luchoroo," the moniker applied to D.C. United's dynamic attacking duo of Luciano Acosta and Wayne Rooney. But on Thursday night, it was all about Lucas.

That's because Lucas Rodriguez introduced himself to a national audience in D.C.'s 4-1 rout of FC Cincinnati, scoring two goals to spearhead the Black-and-Red attack in the absence of Acosta, who was serving the second game of a suspension for a red-card offense in a 2-0 loss at FC Dallas on July 4.

A starter for Argentina in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Rodriguez joined United from Estudiantes over the winter. While he scored one of the most dazzling goals of the season so far in a 5-0 demolition of Real Salt Lake back in March, he's been quiet for long stretches since than as he bedded into his new league.

But he tormented Cincy on Thursday, first curling a gorgeous right-footed finish around goalkeeper Spencer Richey to open the scoring, then restoring D.C.'s lead with a deflected strike from range after Emmanuel Ledesma equalized from the penalty spot.

Rodriguez was perceived as a key addition for United when he arrived, capable of sharing the attacking burden with Luchoroo but also talented and versatile enough to replace Acosta should the latter depart the club via transfer or his expiring contract in the offseason. After a slow start to his MLS adventure, the 22-year-old gave FCC a glimpse of why.
