Official: Minnesota United adds Finnish midfielder Robin Lod as TAM signing

Robin Lod - Minnesota United target - in action for Finland

UPDATE July 16, 11:08 am ET: Minnesota United have confirmed the signing of Finnish international midfielder Robin Lod from Sporting de Gijon using Targeted Allocation Money.

“We’re really excited that he’s decided to join us," head coach Adrian Heath said in a statement. "This is a player that we’ve been trying to get here since his Panathinaikos days, before he went to Spain. We’ve been following him very closely ever since. He’s been outstanding in form for the Finland National team, who are undefeated, at the top of their European qualifying group. I think his game suits the MLS to a T and I’m expecting big things from him. He can score goals, he can make goals, he can play three or four positions."

July 10, 3:15 pm ET: Finnish midfielder Robin Lod is on the verge of a move to Minnesota United FC, a signing that could be announced in the coming days.

The 26-year-old, who spent last season at Sporting Gijon in Spain’s Segunda Division where he scored four goals in 23 appearances, would be a TAM signing, according to a source close to the club.

Lod, who previously played for Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League One and HJK Helsinki in Finland’s Veikkausliiga, would likely be utilized as a left-sided attacking player. He has been capped 33 times for Finland, scoring three times.

On Monday, Loons coach Adrian Heath said he anticipated an incoming transfer in a “couple of days,” according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

The Pioneer Press also reported Minnesota United were likely to also add a left back during the Secondary Transfer Window, which opened Tuesday, following the trade of former captain Francisco Calvo to the Chicago Fire in May.
