For the second consecutive year, Western Conference foes LAFC and the Portland Timbers meet in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals at Banc of California Stadium with Giovanni Savarese's side looking to avenge last year's 3-2 defeat.

Both teams are looking to book a second-ever semifinal berth. LAFC lost to eventual champion Houston Dynamo on penalty kicks a year ago, while the Timbers were knocked out by Real Salt Lake in the 2013 semifinals.

LAFC

LAFC rallied from an early deficit to defeat the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-1, in the Round of 16 at Banc of California Stadium June 20. Vako opened the scoring on seven minutes, but Diego Rossi equalized and Adama Diomande and Carlos Vela struck for second-half goals to send LAFC back to the quarterfinals again.

LAFC are coming off a thorough 6-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps, avenging their first loss of the season. Yordy Reyna struck early, but an own goal by Andy Rose tied the score in the 35th minute. From there, it was all LAFC with Carlos Vela striking twice and Diomande, Mark-Anthony Kaye and Rossi adding one goal apiece.

Portland Timbers

The Timbers reached the USOC quarterfinals for the second year in a row thanks to a decisive 4-0 win over LA Galaxy at Providence Park June 19. Following a Perry Kitchen own goal, Brian Fernandez and Sebastian Blanco scored three minutes apart and Jorge Moreira added a fourth goal eight minutes from full time to cap the rout.

The Timbers have won three of their last four league contests, including a 1-0 victory over NYCFC at Yankee Stadium Sunday. Blanco scored the lone goal, capitalizing on a missed clearance of a Diego Valeri free kick as Portland snapped the Cityzens' 12-match MLS unbeaten streak and handed them their first loss at Yankee Stadium this year.
