Mexico have already booked their berth in the Gold Cup quarterfinals, the first to do so. But El Tri can go there as Group A champions with a win over a Martinique side that is still technically alive Sunday in Charlotte.
This is the third all-time Gold Cup meeting, with Mexico winning both of the other encounters by a combined 12-1 scoreline.
Martinique kept their hopes of advancing past the group stage alive with a convincing 3-0 win over Cuba Wednesday in Denver.
Martinique jumped in front just before halftime on a set piece as Joris Marveaux latched onto Kevin Fortune’s corner kick and guided his open header inside the far post.
In similar fashion, Les Matinino doubled their lead in the 70th minute when an unmarked Stephane Abaul headed in another Fortune corner kick from the edge of the six-yard box. Fortune closed the scoring six minutes from full time, taking a filthy backheel from Parsemain and slotting past hard-luck Cuban goalkeeper Sandy Sanchez.
Andres Guardado came off the bench to score a second-half brace to help lift Mexico to a 3-1 win over Canada Wednesday night in Denver and book a spot in the quarterfinals.
With Mexico leading 1-0 thanks to a Roberto Alvarado rebound five minutes from full time, Guardado doubled the lead with a thunderous strike from distance in the 54th minute. After Lucas Cavallini pulled Canada to within a goal in the 75th minute, Guardado again extended El Tri's lead, putting his shot that deflected off Alphonso Davies in off the post to extend Tata Martino's record in charge of Mexico to a perfect 6-0-0.
