For the third time in four years, the Portland Timbers and LA Galaxy square off in the U.S. Open Cup's Round of 16, as the Western Conference rivals meet at Providence Park Wednesday night.

The teams have split a pair of 1-0 results, with the Timbers avenging a defeat in the 2016 USOC by beating LA a year ago on a 30th-minute Sebastian Blanco goal. The winner faces another West foe in LAFC or the San Jose Earthquakes in the quarterfinals on July 10.

Portland Timbers

Brian Fernandez struck for a brace to lift the Timbers to a 2-1 fourth-round win over Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders FC at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma last Wednesday night.

Fernandez opened the scoring in the sixth minute, but Victor Rodriguez equalized one minute before halftime on a deflected free kick. Fernandez added his second goal in the 50th minute and the Timbers breathed a sigh of relief when Rodriguez put his late penalty kick off the crossbar.

LA Galaxy

For the second straight year, the Galaxy faced an amateur side in the USOC fourth round. Again, LA again avoided a monumental Cupset by beating NPSL side Orange County FC, 3-0, to advance to the Round of 16.

Efrain Alvarez struck for a second-half brace with goals six minutes apart, including a beautiful 20-yard free kick. Emil Cuello capped the scoring in the 90th minute.
