A year after reaching the U.S. Open Cup final for the third time, the Philadelphia Union’ quest for a title begins anew against Eastern Conference foe D.C. United at Audi Field Wednesday night.

While the Union are seeking their first major trophy, D.C. United are no stranger to USOC glory, having won the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S, winning three titles in five appearances in the final.

D.C. United

D.C. United enter the USOC off three consecutive draws and are winless in their last five following a 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes at Audi Field on June 1. After Chris Wondolowski scored his team’s seventh consecutive goal to put the Quakes in front, Luciano Acosta leveled in the 67th minute.

The Eastern Conference rivals have met four previous times in the USOC. The Black-and-Red advanced on penalty kicks in 2011 after a 2-2 draw and the Union earned a measure of revenge a year later with a 2-1 win in extratime in the fourth round. D.C. United won, 3-1, in the fourth round en route to winning their last USOC crown. The most recent encounter was in the 2015 Round of 16, with the Union winning at home, 2-1. Philadelphia reached their second consecutive final, but lost on penalty kicks to Sporting Kansas City.

Philadelphia Union

The Union are hoping to ride the momentum from a stirring come-from-behind 3-2 win over the New York Red Bulls Saturday night at Talen Energy Stadium.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Ilsinho’s entrance in the 53rd minute flipped the game upside down. One minute after setting up Jamiro Monteiro for the Union’s first goal, the Brazilian super-sub leveled in the 61st minute on a stunning solo effort. Ilsinho put the finishing touches on the comeback in the 72nd minute, tapping in the rebound of a saved Monteiro penalty kick.
