LAFC’S CARLOS VELA ON TRACK FOR GREATEST MLS SEASON EVER
Through the opening 15 games of the season, Carlos Vela has continued on his path toward one of the greatest single seasons in Major League Soccer history.
In Los Angeles Football Club’s 4-2 win against the Montréal Impact at Banc of California Stadium last Saturday, Vela first scored his 15th goal of the season to send his club on its way. Vela then recorded assists on two more LAFC goals, bringing his total to nine for the season.
The 24 combined goals and assists through the opening 15 games of the season for Vela are the most at that stage of the campaign in the league’s 24 seasons. In 1998, a pair of LA Galaxy players had a combined 21 goals and assists through their opening 15 games to set the previous mark – Welton, who had 12 goals and nine assists over the Galaxy’s first 15 games that year, and Cobi Jones, who also had 12 goals and nine assists in his first 15 matches, coming over the club’s first 23 matches that season.
Both the 15 goals and nine assists lead Major League Soccer. The only player in league history to lead in both goals and assists over the course of an entire season was Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto FC in 2015 (22 goals, 16 assists).

WONDOLOWSKI ADDS TO LEGACY WITH BACK-TO-BACK GAME RECORD
Chris Wondolowski continued to add to his record-breaking goal legacy, scoring both of the San Jose Earthquakes goals in their 2-1 come-from-behind win against Toronto FC at BMO Field last Sunday evening.
Coming on the heels of his four-goal afternoon against the Chicago Fire when he set the all-time MLS league goals record, Wondolowski has scored six goals in his last two games – matching the most over a pair of matches in MLS history. The feat was achieved three times previously – by the three players to have scored hat tricks in back-to-back games: Eddie Johnson (2002), Robbie Keane (2015) and Josef Martínez (2017).
