Portland Timbers newcomer Brian Fernandez scores in MLS debut

THUMB ONLY - Brian Fernandez - goal celebration

Brian Fernandez made his MLS debut for the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, coming off the bench in the 65th minute.

Just 12 minutes later, the forward opened his account for his new team.

Fernandez, the Timbers' club record transfer signing from Liga MX side Necaxa, scored a 77th-minute equalizer for the Timbers in a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium, taking down a ball over the top and poking it past goalkeeper Joe Willis.

Big things are expected of the explosive 24-year-old Argentine, who scored 18 goals in only 32 appearances for Necaxa. And in Houston he immediately showed off many of the qualities that made him an attractive target for the Timbers: powerful runs, sublime skill and intense work rate.

Fernandez was officially signed on May 6, but he had to wait to make his debut until the necessary paperwork cleared. The wait was worth it for Timbers fans.
