Columbus Crew acquire David Accam from Philadelphia Union

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade

Columbus Crew SC have acquired winger David Accam from the Philadelphia Union in exchange for $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money, $400,000 in General Allocation Money and an International Roster Spot, the clubs announced Wednesday.

Accam, 28, has four goals and two assists this season across eight appearances (four starts) for the Union. His hot start was welcomed after a difficult first campaign with the Union, where he scored just once in 23 matches (12 starts) in 2018.

"We want to welcome David Accam to Columbus Crew SC as David is a fast, dynamic player and a proven attacking threat in MLS,ā€ Crew president Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. ā€œIn addition to having experience in the league, we believe Davidā€™s specific skillset will help us bolster the attack of our current roster and we look forward to his contributions to the club this season.ā€

Accam spent his first three MLS seasons with the Chicago Fire, highlighted by setting career highs in goals (14) and assists (8) in 2017. The Crew also traded Justin Meram to Atlanta United before the Primary Transfer Window closed, opening a spot and need for Accam in Caleb Porter's squad.

Despite trading Accam and Cory Burke's unavailability, the Union are still well stocked in attack.

ā€œThis is a decision that we believe is best for the future of the Philadelphia Union in terms of our roster planning in both the short- and mid-term, as well as for David,ā€ Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a club statement. ā€œWe receive valuable roster flexibility in this deal, both with the international roster spot as well as the allocation money for future transactions. We have our eye on the summer transfer window and beyond and we are confident in our current roster to make this transaction now.ā€
