Homegrown Brenden Aaronson scores for Philadelphia Union in MLS debut

Talk about seizing an opportunity.

With Marco Fabian suspended after picking up a red card last week, 18-year-old playmaking midfielder Brenden Aaronson scored in his MLS debut to give the Philadelphia Union an early second-half lead in their game at Atlanta United in Week 3.

Ezequiel Barco later equalized for Atlanta with a 70th-minute header, while Aaronson made way for Ilsinho four minutes later.

Two minutes after the break, Aaronson unleashed a shot from just beyond that the 18-yard box that left goalkeeper Brad Guzan flat-footed as it buzzed past him into the net. The shot appeared to take a slight deflection off defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, but it was unclear from initial replays how much that may have affected Guzan's read of the shot.

Philadelphia coach Jim Curtin has spoken publicly about the potential of Aaronson, who signed a Homegrown Player last September and last year made 18 appearances for Bethlehem Steel, Philly's USL side.
