Toronto FC Homegrown and US Under-20 national teamer Ayo Akinola opened his MLS account on Sunday, netting the opening goal in TFC's Week 3 match against the New England Revolution with a fine solo run and cool finish in his first-ever league start.
It's a great time for the 19-year-old striker to tally his debut goal in league play. Not only are Toronto in need of fresh blood in the attack following the offseason departures of Sebastian Giovinco and Victor Vazquez, but the US U-20s are counting down to the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, which opens in May, and will hold their final pre-tournament training camp in Spain during the upcoming international window.
Akinola was named to that roster and looks like a strong contender to make coach Tab Ramos's final U-20 squad.
In the long run, however, the Detroit-born, Brampton-raised teenager is also eligible to represent Canada as well as Nigeria, and has already been contacted by both of those countries' respective federations. Should he decide to change allegiance, it would require a one-time switch through FIFA, a move that cannot be reversed.
