Alex Muyl takes hero turn for Red Bulls vs. SJ: It's a great moment for me

Now in his fourth year in MLS, the single-season high for goals by New York Red Bulls winger Alex Muyl is three.

He scored twice in a 55-minute span in Week 3.

The RBNY Homegrown player hasn't started his club's last three matches in all competitions, but he came up in a big spot for the Eastern Conference contenders with his team down a goal at home to the San Jose Earthquakes.

Muyl came off the bench in the 35th minute to replace the injured Florian Valot and he would pop up in the box twice in the span of 20 second-half minutes to turn the scoreline on its head.

His two goals in the 51st and 71st minute set the Red Bulls on their way to a 4-1 win in their 2019 MLS home opener.

"I know a lot of times he takes a lot of flack and I feel like sometimes it's not deserved," RBNY captain Luis Robles said. "And yet for him to come and make such an impact in today's game, I really hope it boosts his confidence because he's an important player for this team."

"It's a great moment for me," Muyl said after the match. "To not be rostered in the previous game and to come into this one, I'm really glad I had the opportunity to do something."
