Wayne Rooney is a jealous man.
D.C. United's star attacker told MLSsoccer.com that he's envious of the past heroes of the club, whose pictures adorn Audi Field. He wants to see himself and his team up there as well. It's the reason his goal for 2019 is a simple one:
"The main thing for us is we want to create history," he said.
"You want to be on one of them pictures for the next generation of players when they come in and looking up," he continued. "You want to create history."
That quest in 2019 starts with a match against defending MLS Cup champions Atlanta United at Audi Field (6 pm ET | ESPN and ESPN Deportes in USA; TSN2 in Canada). It's a stadium which has given D.C. a true home-field advantage ever since it was inaugurated last July 14.
"With Audi Field you could sense that the fans wanted their own stadium and you could sense that excitement building and building," Rooney said about the experience in the building last year. "That was a great thing to be part of."
