With their Feb. 21 Concacaf Champions League opener creeping ever closer, Sporting Kansas City aim to take another step forward in their preseason buildup with their first involvement in the Mobile Mini Sun Cup tournament. SKC and their USL Championship opponents Phoenix Rising will play two 75-minute matches to maximize playing time and fitness work for their squads.
Phoenix Rising FC
Perennial USL contenders and MLS expansion hopefuls, Phoenix feature a number of former MLS players on their roster, including Jason Johnson, Joey Calistri and Adam Jahn. They drew 0-0 with Minnesota United in Tucson in their first preseason action of 2019 over the weekend.
Sporting Kansas City
SKC have trounced their three preseason opponents thus far by a combined score of 20-0, though that means relatively little given that all three were amateur or trialist sides. Phoenix should provide a far stiffer test as Sporting seek full fluency with two weeks to go until their daunting season opener, a CCL first-leg visit from Liga MX powers Toluca.
