New boss Luchi Gonzalez announces FC Dallas coaching staff for 2019 season

New FC Dallas head coach Luchi Gonzalez unveiled his coaching staff on Wednesday, naming former FCD academy coaches Peter Luccin and Mikey Varas as assistants and keeping incumbent goalkeeping coach Drew Keeshan for the 2019 season.

“I believe we’ve been able to build a well-rounded coaching staff that is perfectly in line with our club and our model,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “Peter brings a global knowledge as a player at the highest levels, as well as instincts both in the locker room and on the field. Mikey has proven his fantastic tactical and methodical ability over the last two years and Drew’s experience, not only as a goalkeeping coach, but in the league and with this group of players will be invaluable for our staff.”

Luccin, 39, played for FCD in 2013-14, concluding a distinguished playing career marked by stints with Bordeaux, Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain in his native France as well as Spanish sides Celta de Vigo, Atletico Madrid, Zaragoza and Racing Santander. He began his coaching career as a coach in the FCD academy in 2015, working with the U-12, U-13 and U-14 age groups during his time in the club; he holds a UEFA “B” coaching license.

Varas, 36, is a California native who played college soccer at the University of San Francisco between stints with academy and pro teams in his father’s native Chile before turning to coaching in 2005. His resume includes work at De Anza Force and the Sacramento Republic FC academy in Northern California before joining Dallas’ system in 2017; he holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license.

Keeshan, 44, is set for his 12th season as FCD’s goalkeeping coach. A native of Tipperary, Ireland who played at Waterford United and several other Irish clubs during his playing days, his service at the club dates back to 2008 and he’s worked under Steve Morrow, Schellas Hyndman and Oscar Pareja. He holds both a USSF “B” and a USSF Goalkeeper coaching license.
