Report: LA Galaxy closing in on hiring Jason Kreis to coaching staff

Jason Kreis - Orlando City - 2018

Update: McIntyre clarified his original report on Twitter on Saturday night, saying that Kreis was a possibility to join the Galaxy's coaching staff, working under Dom Kinnear if he remained as head coach.

The LA Galaxy are close to hiring former Orlando City SC, New York City FC and Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis, according to a report published Saturday afternoon by Yahoo's Doug McIntyre.

Kreis has apparently won over Dennis te Kloese, who has reportedly taken over as the Galaxy's general manager, ahead of fellow interviewees including former Portland coach Caleb Porter and current Boca Juniors boss (and former Crew SC player) Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

Interestingly, McIntyre writes that interim coach Galaxy Dominic Kinnear would remain on Kreis' staff as a possible nod to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swedish superstar striker reportedly endorsed Kinnear to team president Chris Klein, and has been reported to be interested in a return to the Galaxy next season after it initially appeared he might be heading back to Europe.

Kreis has been fired after relatively short tenures at his previous two MLS jobs, most recently departing Orlando City in June six games into what would ultimately be a nine-match league losing streak for the Lions. Orlando went on to win only two more MLS fixtures over the remainder of 2018.

Kreis enjoyed seven largely successful seasons at Real Salt Lake from 2007 to 2013, including coaching the team to its only MLS Cup title in 2009 and a runners-up finish in 2013. In his one season in New York, Kreis led NYCFC to a 10-17-7 record.
