2018 MLS Cup in Atlanta shatters previous MLS Cup attendance record

2018 MLS Cup wide shot

In a brief history full of attendance records, it was only appropriate Atlanta United set a new record for attendance at an MLS Cup on Saturday.

The 2018 final, between Atlanta and the Portland Timbers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, featured 73,019 in attendance. That set a new record for MLS Cup attendance, with the previous mark of 61,316 coming in the 2002 MLS Cup at Gillette Stadium, when the LA Galaxy beat the hosting New England Revolution 1-0 in extra time. It's also the highest attended game ever in MLS history.

Coming into the match, Atlanta had racked up the top seven attended regular-season games in MLS history, as well as a record 901,033 fans in the regular season across 17 games this year. They also set the MLS record for MLS All-Star Game attendance, earlier this season, hold the MLS Cup Playoffs attendance record, and have the highest-attended U.S. Open Cup game ever.
