New York Red Bulls 1, Houston Dynamo 0 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

The New York Red Bulls took control of the Supporters' Shield race, after defeating the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Wednesday at Red Bull Arena.

The teams both rotated their lineups for this midweek clash, although many of their stars were available on the bench. New York's win catapults them over the longtime Supporters' Shield leaders, Atlanta United, with both teams set to play this weekend.

After an ineffective first half for both teams, the Red Bulls grabbed the lead in the 55th minute, as a poor clearance led to an Alex Muyl cross and tap-in by rookie Brian White, making his first start and just his second appearance in league play. From there, the Red Bulls held firm on the defensive end to make the lead hold up.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: It's obviously a huge deal for the Red Bulls to win, both because they're in a brutal stretch of four games in two weeks and because it takes them to the top of the Shield race. They'll look to keep on rolling. For Houston, the Red Bulls' rotations appeared to give them space to get a rare road win, but they seem to be putting their eggs in the Texas Derby on Saturday.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH
: Of course, it's the goal, breaking the stalemate and a landmark occasion for White.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Tyler Adams played an excellent two-way game in midfield, leading a markedly rotated New York lineup with his words and actions, and deserves the honors as a result.
