Piatti vs. SKC 6/30/18

Ignacio Piatti's strike early in the second half and Alejandro Silva's 70th-minute penalty sent the Montreal Impact to a 2-0 win over visiting Sporting Kansas City Saturday night.

Sporting KC's undefeated streak ended at seven matches, and their string of consecutive wins over Montreal came to a halt at six.

The Impact stymied the Western Conference co-leaders despite losing midfielder Samuel Piette to a late-first half injury. Goalkeeper Evan Bush was also shaken up after a save in the second half but stayed in the game.

Piatti volleyed in a shot with SKC goalkeeper Tim Melia having just recovered from being out of the net on a scramble in the 54th minute. Later, Daniel Lovitz drew a foul in the box on SKC's Ike Opara, and Silva converted from the spot.

Montreal has won four of five.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: The Impact keep getting better, it appears, and were undoubtedly the better team throughout this game against one of the league's best clubs. Montreal still doesn't do draws -- the Impact have either won or lost 38 straight games. Coming up: a stretch of seven games across all competitions between July 7 and 28. For Sporting KC, three of their next four games are away from home, so their hold on a high spot in the standings will be tested.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Piatti's goal was pretty, but the sight of Bush reaching up to stop Graham Zusi's free kick in the 77th minute before crashing into the side netting was indicative of the kind of night it was for the home side at Stade Saputo. Montreal has clean sheets in three of their most recent wins.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Piatti was a tough mark as always, and tallied his ninth goal of the season. He was particularly effective in the second half when the Impact ramped up the attack on offense.
