Minnesota United FC 1, Sporting Kansas City 1 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

Khiry Shelton and Darwin Quintero exchanged first half goals, but Sporting Kansas City and Minnesota United FC were unable to find the second half winner and settled for a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at TCF Bank Stadium

Shelton latched onto an inswinging Johnny Russell corner kick and put a downward header past Bobby Shuttleworth from inside the six-yard box to give Sporting Kansas City (7-2-3) a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

Shelton’s first goal in a Sporting uniform came three minutes after the Loons (4-7-1) had a goal called back for offside when it was ruled Christian Ramirez was in an offside position when he tapped in a Darwin Quintero cross that appeared to deflect off Matt Besler’s arm.

Quintero leveled in the 20th minute when he put in the rebound of his own saved headed shot past Tim Melia after Miguel Ibarra whipped in a quality cross from the right flank.

Graham Zusi had a golden chance for the late winner, heading Daniel Salloi's off the turf and then the post in the 77th minute.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Mixed bag for both, with the Loons rebounding from back-to-back defeats to come away with a point against the Western Conference leaders despite conceding in the opening 10 minutes. Peter Vermes won’t be thrilled, but its an away point.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH
: It’s got to be the early substitution Vermes made to bring
    Seth Sinovic
    on for
    Jimmy Medranda
    in the 36th minute.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Given his work against Ibarra (see above), Sinovic put in a quality shift, but Shelton gets the nod. After doing a lot of the dirty work, he was rewarded with his first Sporting goal.
