D.C. United are strengthening their midfield with the addition of a Venezuelan international, according to a Washington Post report.

Citing anonymous sources, the Post’s Steve Goff reported on Tuesday that D.C. are signing Junior Moreno, a central midfielder with five national-team caps, from Zulia FC.

Moreno, 24, is a box-to-box type who made his Venezuela debut in last summer’s friendly vs. the United States, assisting on Jose Manuel Velazquez’s goal as the Vinotinto earned a 1-1 draw at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Later in the year he started in two World Cup qualifiers and came off the bench in another.

His father, Carlos Horacio Moreno, is an Argentinean coach who has worked in Venezuela for more than three decades and has led Zulia since 2014.

United, who finished in the Eastern Conference basement in 2017, have already made several roster moves this winter, signing Costa Rican midfielder Ulises Segura and acquiring Frederic Brillant and Darren Mattocks in trades.
