If you've been monitoring the weather forecasts for 2017 MLS Cup over the past week, you'll have noticed the percentage chance for snow has fluctuated from day to day (at least on Weather.com).
On Wednesday those forecasts called for a "medium threat of snow" (30-40 percent chance of snow flurries) with temperatures feeling like the mid-20s. As of Friday, that percentage chance of precipitation dropped to 15 percent during the match, and by this morning, we were down to "little or no snowfall accumulation expected." Turns out there was nothing but the slightest of flurries, meaning there's still never been a snow-covered MLS Cup.
The closest we came to breaking out the orange ball at a final was in 2013, when MLS Cup between Kansas City and Salt Lake kicked off with a game time temperature of 20 degrees.
While we’ve yet to see snow at an MLS Cup, there have been several snow games during the regular season, including a memorable one earlier this year in Minnesota's first-ever MLS home match. Unsurprisingly, Colorado have been involved in a preponderance of them, while the Red Bulls have hosted two snow games and Toronto FC have played host to one. In late May. Fun.
Below is the list of matches in MLS history in which “snow” has been entered as a weather condition, according to MLS Communications' Rick Lawes. Because of a change in how the league recorded statistics, Lawes cautioned that this list might not be complete.
