Tom Soehn confirms he interviewed for New England Revolution coaching job

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.—Tom Soehn confirmed last week that he’s interviewed for the New England Revolution’s managerial opening, though the longtime MLS coach felt his five-game stint as Revs interim head coach was an ongoing audition.
Soehn joined Jay Heaps’ staff in New England in January 2014, and took over as interim head coach after Heaps was dismissed in September. The Revs performed well during his five games in charge, posting a 3-1-1 record with wins over Supporters’ Shield winners and runners-up Toronto FC and New York City FC and their only road victory of the 2017 season.
“I was hopefully able to show by our play what [my style] looks like,” Soehn said. “I’ve been in the league for a long time and I have a lot of experiences. I felt like the guys really responded to that, so part of my resume was showing what I could do with the team at the end. I was really happy with the guys and how we finished the season.”
Soehn managed D.C. United in the mid-aughts, served as Director of Soccer Operations for the Vancouver Whitecaps from 2010-12 and briefly served as interim head coach for Vancouver between the tenures of Teitur Thordarson and Martin Rennie.
Soehn said he tried to implement a possession style with the Revs, featuring quick play out of the back and fluid movement in the attacking third. From his point of view, New England did exactly that.
“If I’m not here, I know the guys gave me everything they could,” Soehn said. “That’s all a coach could really ever ask for.”
But Soehn made no secret about it: He wants to hear from general manager Mike Burns, who’s leading the search, sooner rather than later. Burns has told other media outlets that he’s interviewed north of 20 candidates, exploring international and domestic options.
“Look, decisions like these affect the whole family,” Soehn said. “So as soon as they know, I’d want to know as well.”
